What it actually checks

1

Duplicate line items

Flags any line with the same description, quantity, and unit price as another line on the same invoice — the most common way vendors accidentally (or not) double-bill a charge.

2

Line-item math

Confirms quantity × unit price equals the line total for every row. Off-by-a-decimal errors and manual entry mistakes usually show up here first.

3

Subtotal reconciliation

Adds up every line total and compares it to the invoice's stated subtotal.

4

Tax rate plausibility

Compares the effective tax rate against the vendor state's known minimum and a realistic combined state-plus-local ceiling. Doesn't know your exact local rate — flags what's implausible, not what's merely unfamiliar.

5

Grand total check

Confirms subtotal plus tax equals the amount actually due.

What it doesn't do

  • It doesn't compare this invoice against past invoices from the same vendor — that needs an account, coming later.
  • It can't read scanned or photographed PDFs without a text layer — it will tell you plainly if extraction fails, rather than guessing.
  • It doesn't know your local combined tax rate exactly — it flags rates that are implausible for the state, not ones that are simply higher than average.
  • It's not a replacement for a licensed accountant on anything unusual — it's a fast first pass before you send a routine invoice to be paid.

Questions

Does this catch duplicate invoices from the same vendor across different uploads?

No — the free scanner checks one invoice at a time and looks for duplicate line items within that single invoice. It does not compare invoices to each other. Cross-invoice detection needs an account to remember past uploads, which isn't part of this anonymous tool.

Can it read scanned or photographed invoices?

Not yet. The scanner reads the text layer inside a PDF. If your invoice is a scanned image with no selectable text, extraction will fail and the tool tells you directly rather than guessing at numbers it can't see.

Is my invoice data stored anywhere?

No. Text extraction happens in your browser. Only the extracted text is sent to the server to run the checks, and it isn't saved to a database or file storage. Closing the tab clears everything.

What exactly does the scanner check?

Five things: duplicate line items, whether quantity times unit price equals each line's total, whether line totals sum to the stated subtotal, whether the tax rate is plausible for the vendor's state, and whether subtotal plus tax equals the grand total.
